SCARLET RUNNER/SEVEN YEAR BEAN:
Scientific name: Archidendron lucyi
Height: Scarlet runner beans are very quick growing, they grow to around 6-8ft tall.
Weight: The can weigh up to 2.5kg! They are a very yummy and sturdy plant
Distribution: The plant originated in central America, and is a favourite of the hummingbird! But is found all over the world now, including in the Daintree!
Life span: They live from around 2 to several years!
Facts:
Nor only do they have beautiful flowers, but yummy beans as well!
They have 44 calories per serving!
They belong to the group 'Phaseolus coccineus' (The beans are long, with red or pink flowers)
Unlike most beans it is a 'perennial' plant it is usually killed to the grown by winter frosts
It is called the flowering bean, for its beautiful looks and beans
They are cooked and used for salads etc. and are a great garnish
BERNIE'S TAMARIND!
Scientific name: Diploglottis bernieana
Height: 5 to 8m
Weight: -
Distribution: Restricted to the area between Cooktown and Innisfail. Altitudinal range from sea level to 600 m. Grows in well developed lowland and upland rain forest.
Life span: Unknown
Facts: The fruit of Bernie’s Tamarind or Diploglottis berniana are abundant on the rainforest floor. We can thank Cyclone Yasi for the masses of colourful fruit!
It has large, distinctive compound leaves. The fruit are prickly, like gold tinsel balls and supposedly edible as a bush food.
They belong to the family 'Sapindaceae'
It is a beautiful tree with big leaves and edible fruit. The leaves and fruit are very hairy!
